“Eerie, beautiful, and devastating.” —Chicago Tribune

“A stealthy hit with staying power. . . . thriller-like pacing.” —The New York Times

Thirteen Reasons Why will leave you with chills long after you have finished reading.” —Amber Gibson, NPR’s “All Things Considered”

You can’t stop the future.

You can’t rewind the past.
The only way to learn the secret . . . is to press play.

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why.

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah's pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

"I'm not sure if this should be a teen book or not. I don't want to put ideas into young minds or glorify suicide in any way, considering my brother chose this route at 30 years old. He was my very best friend and it continues to devastate me every day 15 years later. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
On the other hand, we do need to open this discussion to teens, but I just don't feel that the impact of this young girls suicide was portrayed as the immensely life ruining action for her friends and family that it should have been. Again, I'm just not sure this is the right book to impact the topic to teens as the devastating event that it is for all concerned. That being said, as a 43 year old adult who looks back on the days of high school and rumors and their impact on young people, I found the book to be representative of that deep hurt and troubling period for so many young people. This is a good read and a very page-turning, gotta know more, type of book. I would normally say "I enjoyed this book" but given the subject matter, I can't say I "enjoyed" it but I was drawn in deeply to the characters and the story and read it in one day (if you don't count reading half one day and half the next - it was really just one day of reading.) I thought the characters were well created, the book kept a great building pace, and the subject matter was impactful. FOR ADULTS (or well grounded, mature, and rooted teens) this was a very good read."

Thirteen Reasons Why Jay Asher Books Reviews

  • This was a reread for me and I'm so glad I dived back in it. I first fell in love with this story in high school. For the longest time it was the only representation I had for mental illness, I connected with a dead girl because she had so many emotions I also shared sometimes to my own fright. Hannah's story is tragic and heartbreaking. The ending always shook me because she wasn't coming back, you had such a strong narrator for these tragedies but she wasn't going to get up and say ha! It's all a joke. She was gone, and that is one of the reasons I always came back to this book. I needed to know she was gone, that is the outcome of suicide that I didn't want to see at 17, your story is finished. Now as an adult reading it, it's still heartbreaking and terribly tragic and I still connect so strongly to this story. I loved this book and will always love this book. I read more into it now than what I did then. Clay was the perfect perspective to put it in because I can't think good things about any of the other characters, as hard as the tv show wants you too. The tv show has recently released on Netflix and they've changed so much from the original book and part of me wonders is if it's to make it make more sense. The thing is, suicide doesn't make sense. That tragic act doesn't have to make sense. It's sad and scary, and we will ever understand even with 13 separate and valid reasons, it still doesn't make sense. One this book did such a good job of showing is how small things, things we think inconsequential, can be detrimental to someone else. Something as simple as not saying goodbye given the opportunity, can change how someone feels. Now does this mean we have to walk on egg shells? No, that actually impossible. It means watch what your doing basically. If your having a bad day it isn't okay to take it out on someone else, we can control the small things so the big things won't spiral. This book will always hold a special place in my heart, and I'm sure once the shock of the show wears off it will too. I needed to reread this book, it's good to remember what we do and who we are matters. Even when you think you don't matter and no one would care, you do matter. You matter so much! ❤️
  • I don't know what I can say about this book that hasn't already been said. I read it after watching the Netflix series, and while there are definitely differences between the two, the combination left me reeling. It is deeply moving, poignant, and yet one of the most hopeful books I've ever read.

The story revolves around Clay, who finds a box of cassette tapes waiting on his doorstep one day. As he listens to them, he is drawn into the story of Hannah, his crush that committed suicide just a couple weeks earlier. The tapes share the thirteen reasons why she made the choice that she did, one for each person that contributed to that decision.

On the surface, it sounds like a horrifying premise for a read. It is a tough read at times, but no less important. Her point of creating the tapes, to be passed to each person on them, was not to be cruel. It was to make a point... the point that how we act toward one another, whether deliberate or not, makes a difference. Any one of those acts can be small in and of itself, but they can add up to push a person over the edge.

Having seen the series and read the book, I have to say something I never thought I would. As much as I loved the book, I felt that the series really showed Hannah's angst just a bit more clearly. Admittedly, some of that was accomplished through changes in the plot and some details. Ideally, I would suggest indulging in both.
  • I'm not sure if this should be a teen book or not.
• I cannot fathom why there are not 25,000 5-star reviews of this book already (it was published 3 weeks ago). This book of poetry is priceless. I want to rip out nearly half of the pages and frame them on my walls. Bunmi reminds me that I am not alone in my sweetest and deepest and darkest feelings along this journey of motherhood. I feel so grateful that she put her feelings to pen and paper and that we are all lucky enough to have the opportunity to read it. She is authentic in an image-obsessed world, funny, even if its considered "inappropriate", and raw, even when it must have been painful to admit. I have this book on my bedside table and will keep it there for years to come. And I will gift this book to dozens of mothers everywhere. I encourage you to do the same.
  • A beautiful collection of poems that dig deep into the heart of motherhood. I cried only a few pages in, and then laughed a few pages later. It’s incredible to see the highs and lows of motherhood starkly on the pages of this book. Well done Bunmi, you’ve created a masterpiece. Will be buying more as gifts for friends.
  • This arrived yesterday, and I read it cover to cover this morning after my precious angels went to school. With tears in my eyes, I felt all the emotions of motherhood with Bunmi, and finally felt like someone else understands me.
  • I love all of Bunmi Laditan’s books. She’s unquestionably hilarious, but there’s an ability she has to touch the heartbreaking truth that’s a part of life. This book moved me to tears and made me laugh so loudly people turned and stared (I was in public reading the “Laughter” chapter.) It deals with laundry, relationships, Depression, poop, pizza, loss, and love. It’s perfect for mothers at any stages. Buy multiples. I am.
  • This book is a beautiful collection of honest, compassionate, and healing poetry about motherhood. I just got it today, and it's already helped me so much. Her words are exactly what I needed to read right now... Every mom on the planet should read it!
  • Such an honest and realistic view of motherhood, capturing all the emotions that come with it. Many times, motherhood is sugar coated, but this is real. Love it.
  • Eloquently captures the joy and ache of motherhood. I will cherish this book forever- and reread it often.
  • "The audacity of a child's
    demands for love
    are only matched
    by the ridiculous depths
    of the love their parents
    have for them."

Dear Mother wasn't exactly what I was expecting, in good ways and bad. Having followed the author on Facebook for the last couple of years, I'm used to her hilarious, crude, weird status updates, so I honestly expected this to be a funny collection of anecdotes about her kids and her reactions to their zaniness. Instead, I got a collection that was 10% humor, 90% utter seriousness.

    "to make a two-year-old,
    combine one puppy
    one incontinent octopus
and a single juice box-loving gangster
    mix until it starts slapping"

The humorous parts, short as they were, were pretty good, though not on par with her everyday updates — to be fair, I guess it's not easy to write side-splitting poetry! That said, there were a few gems that made me smile (or laugh out loud, like the quote above).

    "dear mother,
    no
    they would not
    be better off
    without
    you"

While I was mostly disappointed to see how serious it was, there were a few poems (like this one) that really hit me in the gut and made me sit still and soak it in for a minute, and I appreciated those moments tremendously. I always heard people say parenthood was the hardest job you could have, and I thought it was an exaggeration until I started living it. The guilt and feelings of self-inadequacy I live with every single day? Those are hard to breathe through. Bunmi gets it, though, and she offers some incredible reassurances that ended up being exactly what I needed to hear today.

All in all, it's not my favorite book I've read on life as a parent, and it's nothing ground-breaking, but it's got a lot of enjoyable poems and I think most mothers, or parents in general, will find it easy to relate to.

Training for the Uphill Athlete A Manual for Mountain Runners and Ski Mountaineers Steve House Scott Johnston Kilian Jornet 9781938340840 Books Reviews

  • These three extraordinary athletes have collaborated to create the best endurance training guide out there. It is chock-full of science, research, techniques, and strategies that can help you improve your endurance.

First, they start with the Physiological Basis for Endurance, then move into Methods (120 pages, longest section of book), then they address Strength training, and finally How to Train which helps you develop your own customized plan.

They give priceless advice about all the components that go into your endurance, which variables are easier to move, and how to move them (most efficiently). Then they show you how to create your own training personal plan for optimal performance while minimizing the chance of injury.

If you are a trail runner, backcountry skier, mountaineer, hiker, or any 'uphill' sport, you'll find pure gold in this book. And it's extremely well-written.

I think anybody reading this book would gain
    * detailed techniques pertinent to their own strengths/weaknesses
    * detailed strategies to create your training plan
    * inspiration to pursue big goals

Personal stories from 20+ other top athletes enrich the book (and gave me further specific advice). My only suggestion, if I may be so bold, would be an expanded discussion for the older athlete -- maybe a topic for a future book?

I have been a huge fan of the authors for many years, since House's "Beyond the Mountain." "Training for the New Alpinism" helped me gain endurance to run a hilly 100K race last year and (sort of) keep up with my teenage son multi-pitch rock climbing. This new collaboration with Kilian Jornet adds his extraordinary perspective - and provides even more specifics.

I predict this book will be the best investment you'll make in your training this year.
  • The book "Training for the New Alpinism" by Scott Johnston and Steve House set new standards for thorough, science and coaching-based training advice for alpinists and endurance athletes alike. Although focused on fast and light alpinism (aka "new" alpinism), Johnston's background as a coach in cross country skiing permeated the book and, as a result, much of the book could be easily applied to other endeavors- like cross country skiing, mountain running, and ski mountaineering (SkiMo). With support from Patagonia as publisher, a large emphasis was placed on clear, high quality, information-dense graphics that were far superior to anything else available at the time. I highly recommended this book when it was published and continue to do so today.

Enter this new volume from Johnston and co-authors Steve House and Kilian Jornet that is focused on mountain running, ultra running, and  SkiMo. Along with the same science and coaching-based guidance, similarly superior graphics, a unique focus on strength development, and an excellent handbook to developing your own training plan, "Training for the Uphill Athlete" represents a new milestone in quality and thoroughness in a training guide for the endurance athlete.

In this book one will find a nicely presented approach to training for "uphill" endurance sports such as mountain running and SkiMo. Throughout, the authors provide a scientific and/or coaching-based foundation for the specific training programs being described. Of particular note are the sections on ATP production and lactate metabolism- the best presentation of this material that I have been exposed to. All of this gives the reader the basis for (or a starting point for) development of a personal training "philosophy"- something that is critical to the success of any training regimen. As is pointed out frequently in the book, each individual presents a unique combination of physiology, biomechanics, life situation, and personality. Provided with a basic foundational approach and the specific tools needed to enable successful, progressive training , the reader is well positioned to be able to design and execute upon a training program that is aligned with his or her abilities, time, commitment, and goals.

The overarching mantras laced through the material are

aerobic base development, "progression, progression, progression", and the critical importance of substantial integrated strength training elements

Too many athletes and recreationalists ramp training up too quickly, incorporate intensity too soon, suffer injury, and, potentially, burnout. By properly progressing training load and intensity and integrating strength sessions into the program such "training errors" can be largely avoided. These themes are regularly brought forward and discussed throughout the book and recommendations are provided to help the reader incorporate appropriate progressions and strength programs.

Although of limited value, the book is punctuated by sidebar stories and opinions from representative uphill athletes- both elite level and some well-known sub-elite athletes. I find these individual essays to be more of a hinderance to the authors otherwise successful goal to provide clear guidance but I know that many find such stories inspirational.

Also included are "Kilian's Notes"- short sections where Kilian describes his training history, training methods, and some specific workouts. Again, I find these of limited value as they are coming from an athlete who has been in intensive endurance training since he was 13 years old, with a 90+ VO2max, mental fortitude that is similarly off the charts, and has raced thousands of times. Having trained with athletes with some of these attributes, I can say that what they do is not particularly relevant even to those with relatively high VO2max and long histories with training for endurance sport. If you have ever competed against or trained with someone with a 90+ VO2max you will know what I mean. I suggest that one take these Kilian missives as just that- an entertaining peak into what such an extraordinary and accomplished athlete does and not a prescription for anyone else. Unfortunately there is no warning to this effect in the book.

I have found little to disagree with in this book with the exception of the science fiction provided on "fat adaptation" and a "hook-line-and-sinker" devotion to the persistent hunting theory as a basis for understanding human endurance abilities. But these are minor items and thankfully nutrition is not a focus of the book so it is easy to let these go and concentrate on all of the truly valuable information and presentation in the book.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in understanding fundamental endurance training concepts, evolving a personal approach based on these concepts, and developing a reliable, flexible training plan that will, with consistency and commitment, lead to success and goal achievement in endurance sport.
  • Very good science and overview of training. There are nuggets of new information but by and large it’s very similar to other running books/training guides. If you haven’t previously read Daniels, Pfitz, Lore of Running, etc it will be very informative.
  • Excellent content, beutifull photos, this book has everything any athlete needs to plan efficient and suituited for purpose training.
  • An extraordinary resource and reference and a beautiful book. The most comprehensive training manual for ultra, endurance, trail and mountain running I've read - supplemented with stories from elite endurance athletes and beautiful full page colour images. Highly recommended.

Essentials of Nursing Law and Ethics 9781284030204 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • This is a very educational book I bought for school. It has useful information for real world nursing situations. I float to other floors frequently so the chapter on floating was very useful. My only complaint is that you have to buy the extra online code to get access to the review questions when you buy the online book.
  • As far as textbooks I have been pulled into modern times for e-books, and this one was worth becoming a staple on my bookshelf. The author explained to a non-law person (me) and I found myself enjoying the plain talk expository and the many case examples. It is one of the better books chosen by professors for my degree
  • Fast shipping, decent book quality for rental. Did the job!
  • Good book- required for school
  • Book 8n perfect new condition!
  • The information presented is concise and easy to read. The concepts are relevant to the nursing profession, especially for issues of legal self-protection and rights as a nurse.
  • Easy to read & understand
  • Incredibly boring.

  • I'll skip the details of the story and its writing, as other reviewers can attest to the quality of the book. Instead, I want to comment on how this book has the power to change a child's behavior and make him love books.

I was first introduced to this book almost 35 years ago. As a recently immigrated child having difficulties adjusting to the school, I got into a great deal of trouble for acting out in the classroom.

A kind teacher who saw my potential assigned the book to me during a parent-teacher conference. It made a huge impact on me -- it might seem like hyperbole, but this book may well have shaped my life. It instilled a great hunger for reading, and a love of learning.

Over the years, I had forgotten the details of the story, but not its broad outlines. Two of the (to me) central themes engineering and self-sufficiency, sticks with me to this day.

I now have my own kids. I have been increasingly concerned that the older one had not yet developed a sufficient interest in reading. I tried to get them started on this book, but was initially met with indifference when I tried to read the opening chapter to them. My wife did not back me up on this at first, either.

But I persisted, and after a couple more tries, reading little by little at first before bedtime, I got the boys interested in the story. The real breakthrough came a few chapters in, when the boys begged to keep going. By the time we finished the book, they were fully absorbed into the book - there were nights when I (or my wife, who had also gotten into the book) were reading for nearly an hour! Some nights, we simply read it out to them. Other nights, the boys stayed up to read the words along with us.

They have now asked to have other long-form stories. I think the boys have now graduated from short 10-page picture books.

One of the best part of all this came this morning, about two weeks after we had finished the book. The boys aunt and cousins came over to visit, and the older one excitedly shared this book, reading it out to his aunt!
  • I grew up with the animated film from the early 80’s and picked up the book in grade school, but declined due to “not being like the movie”...years later as an adult, I appreciate the Book way more than the movie. The book is a more in depth story that Don Bluth changed quite a bit in the film. (Still enjoy the film, but not as much as the book!) This Book is a treasured gem for all ages whether young or old or for the young at heart!!)
  • I had heard of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, but somehow got through my childhood without ever having read it. My 11 –year and 9-year old sons were reading it for their youth book club this last month. I read it with 9-year old Daniel in the evenings using the flip-flop technique. I would read a page and then he would read one.
Mrs. Frisby is a widowed mouse with four young children living in a field. Her youngest son, Timothy is very ill and unfortunately it is time to move to summer quarters before Farmer Fitzgibbon starts to plow his fields. Mrs. Frisby seeks help amongst her neighbors and is told by a wise owl to get help from the Rats. When Mrs. Frisby meets the rats, she discovers far more about them and her late husband than she had ever imagined. Will they be able to save Timothy before the plow comes?
Daniel and I both greatly enjoyed the story as did Kile as well. We had to have a discussion about it after we all finished. I fell asleep one night and couldn’t read further so Daniel took the book and finished it himself that night, I had to catch up the next day to see how it ended! It was a great heroic tale of Mrs. Frisby and her love for her children, but the entire rats sequence was very intriguing. Daniel loved finding out where they came from, but was a bit stressed out about the more suspenseful parts of the novel. We still want to know who the mysterious two rats were in the end! I really liked the ambiguous ending and the questions of ethics and morality that permeated the story.

Overall, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a wonderful fantasy novel that will delight readers of all ages.

  • I read this book for the first time in third grade (several decades ago), and it remains one of my favorite books of all time. I bought it as a gift for my nephew recently, but ended up re-reading it myself. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time I read it. In fact, I didn't want it to end, and wanted to hear a lot more of the story of the rats. A great story, highly recommended for kids (and adults).

My daughter saw the film before reading the book and found the text as intriguing as the film, within obvious limits, or
vice versa. She remarked that the plotline mirrors so many real-life human plights so often exploited by the media. I
compare it to "Animal Farm" and "Charlotte's Web" without the politico pathos. And, that the suppressed nobility of
creatures in any context often must be encouraged (aka - even reverting to subterfuge) to overcome adversity and
work toward a greater good and the collective benefit. Worth the time for child and adult. Indy
  • I have such wonderful memories of this story! I read it in elementary school and it really stuck with me. My daughter loves to read (she's 8 but a bit advanced for her age) so I got this book for her. We decided to read it together-actually she read it to me. It was lovely to re-experience the story and to share it with her. I recommend it for advanced 3rd grade to normal 5th grade readers. Compelling but easy to follow story.

He vows to find her sister. She helps him find himself.

The only son of Logan Ramsay, the man known to all as the Beast of the Highlands, Gavin Ramsay feels a powerful need to prove himself. His sire thinks he’s incapable of leading a mission on his own, but when a young lass goes missing from the clan, Gavin vows to find her. His time has come—if he can avoid being distracted by the missing girl’s sister, Merewen, a sweet yet fierce beauty whose stunning talent with the bow rivals even that of his mother.

Merewen Baird will do anything to save her sister. She’s long admired Gavin, and when he agrees to search for Linet with her, she sets off on a journey with him and several of his cousins. Their search brings them to Inverness, a burgh by the sea, where they discover an underground the likes of which the Ramsay and Grant cousins have never seen. Lasses and lads fight for coin, and there are whispers of a coming shipment of illegal, human, merchandise.

To save Linet and the other lasses and lads, Merewen and Gavin must risk all—including the promise of a future with each other.

Highland Resilience The Band of Cousins Book 6 edition by Keira Montclair Angela Polidoro Romance eBooks Reviews

  • It was hard to live up to a sire nicknamed "The Beast" and a mother reputed to be the best archer in the land! Gavin the only son of Logan and Gwyneth Ramsey, he had been working with his cousin Gavin for the Band of Cousins who were determined to find and stop the Channel of Dubh completely. They stole boys and girls and sold them far off, never to be seen again. He just wanted to have an adventure!
Well, that was about to happen when he heard Merewen, his neighbor screaming for her sister Linnet. She was beyond frantic that she was missing and far away from their home. How could she know this? But as Gavin and some of his cousins rode in, the thought became she could have been grabbed by the very people they were trying to stop!
Thus the search begins. Keira Montclair has written a story filled with suspense, intrigue, adventure and emotions that range from one spectrum to the other. But with her skillful crafting of words, blended with the history of the time, you will not be able to put it down. Yes, here I am after one in the morning and had to finish!! Cannot wait for the next in this series and I urge you not to miss this one!
  • The next entry in the series. I have read all of Ms. Montclair's books and believe you need to read them in order for context.

The Band of Cousins are struggling to discover who keeps stealing (and selling) young women and children. To do so, they end up searching in the darkest, seediest locations...meeting the darkest people.

Gavin Ramsay, son of the man known throughout the Highlands as The Beast, agrees to help Merewen find her sister that she believes has been stolen. Gavin suspects she's been taken/sold by the Channel of Dubh and if so, it's a race against time.
  • I have been in love with the Ramsey and Grant clans forever. Since I discovered my first story. The generations that have come after have legends to follow but these cousins are creating their own legacies.
I just finished this story and can't wait for the next. The books are all standalone but you miss out on the delight of the series of you don't read them all.
  • Reading this series from the very beginning is like watching your own family grow. To see how each son or daughter change & find the path they want to follow. Over coming odds they face, including parents who do not believe in them.
I can’t wait for the next book & I certainly hope it’s about Gregor & Conner.
  • I really like Me Montclair's highland stories but I was hoping this one would be a little bit more intriguing.
  • Another brilliant book by Montclair! The story line is amazing, the love story is beautiful and you can help but fall in love with these characters all over again. And there are a few knew ones you will love to hate. They will add some wonderful suspense filled mystery. This is a book that you will have hard time putting down. It is another masterpiece. If you haven’t read any of her other books start at the beginning. You will not regret it!
  • Just love her books about the Grant and Ramsay Family Children.
She has a wonderful way of putting the story out there.
Have read all of her books so far about these family.
I hope she keeps them coming
  • This Band of Cousin s is just as great as the others. If you haven't read any of the others. You are missing. As always you will be engrossed to see what happens next. It is a must read. Can't wait for the next next book

A controversial tale of friendship and tragedy during the Great Depression

They are an unlikely pair George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation.

Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him.

"A thriller, a gripping tale . . . that you will not set down until it is finished. Steinbeck has touched the quick." —The New York Times

Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck 9780140177398 Books Reviews :

Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck 9780140177398 Books Reviews

  • See, now here is a book with a good story and a writing style that draws you in. I hade recently picked up "The Catcher in The Rye" as I missed it in school, I think maybe our school was one of the ones that banned it. Anyway, I picked up the catcher to see what all the hype was about, I was kind of disappointed. Sorry, I just do not get what all the fuss and fan fair is about. But "Of Mice And Men", This is a great book. One of my favorites, Right behind Robinson Crusoe. \
This book looks much like the picture but mine is more worn, has a little wear on the edges of the cover and the pages have that aged tea stained color and it smells old, Just the way I love em. Mine is actually from 1947.
  • I'm working my way through these books, and always look forward to a new one. They are great for the intermediate crossworder or for when I don't want to think too much. Some are easy, some harder, some just fun. I like that the pages are perforated to tear out so that it is easier to do the puzzles on the left side in the first half, and the puzzles on the right side in the second half. I just wish there were fewer "quote" puzzles.
  • This review is a work in progress. I have the 1953 book with an introduction by Joseph Henry Jackson. I found the introduction by Mr. Jackson to be very instructive and enjoyable. However it may be for more a student than the casual reader.

My book is from The Viking Press. It contains six short novels. They are mostly chronological in the order that John Steinbeck published them. The one exception is that the first short novel in the book is "Tortilla Flat". The second is "The Red Pony". These were composed, I think, in the opposite order. Mr. Jackson explains this. These are followed by "Of Mice and Men", "The Moon Is Down", "Cannery Row", and "The Pearl".

I read "The Red Pony First". There is a lot in "The Red Pony" which reminds me "Of Mice and Men". It is episodic. The first episode is "The Gift", which is about a child Jody, and his pony. It is beautiful, poignant, and ultimately painful. The second episode is "The Great Mountains". It actually is about a visitor to the same ranch that is the setting for first story. Jody and his family are in this story, along with an elderly visitor. The next episode is "The Promise" which is, more or less, a sequel to the first story. It is somewhat painful. The last episode is "The Leader of The People" which is a bittersweet story about a senior citizen member of the same family at the ranch. It is my personal favorite episode.

I completely enjoyed this novella "Of Mice And Men". It is a relatively short work. It was written in 1937, before The Grapes of Wrath. I had previously read The Grapes of Wrath. I enjoyed this book more. I have very little formal education in regard to literature. So my opinion may be very faulty. Anyway, I felt this work was a more artistic work than The Grapes of Wrath.

This work reminded me more of Ermest Hemingway. I was very impressed. As is common with many shorter works, the author leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The reader is left to speculate why certain issues develope and are resolved in certain manners. I felt all the aspects of the relationship between George and Lenny were slightly unclear. The book ended with me wishing I knew more about George. My guess is that is intentional on the part of Mr. Steinbeck.

I would like to note that I purchased this "Of Mice and Men" on and at the same time purchased the audiobook narrated by Gary Sinise. I felt Mr. Sinise was really excellent and I highly recommend the audiobook version as read by Mr. Sinise. Mr. Sinise really added to the pleasure of the reading experience with his very professional performance.
  • The novel is great of course, but this paperback is a piece of junk - it's as though a 12 year old printed out the text and bound it together. The paragraphs are all messed up, the type is tiny - I had to throw it out. Don't know who they're trying to kid here, but DO NOT BUY this version of it. There was no publisher, no book info at all.
  • Gary Sinise is the reader, which is a nice touch. I bought this audio for use in my classroom, which saves my voice. While Sinise does a great job, there are some drawbacks for using in the classroom
The CDs are not labeled with chapters and times. I originally thought there would be 2 chapters per cd but once chapter 2 ended, chapter 3 started, so this isn't the case. I can't speak for the other CDs, and perhaps this was a space issue, but a little annoying. In addition, I use the audio in different classes who are sometimes in different parts of the book, and having a Table of Contents sheet inside the box or on each CD would be great. Instead, I have to figure out what number track I have to skip to by stopping and listening if I didn't pay attention before and write down the track or time stamp during the previous reading (this can be easily forgotten if we get sidetracked or if I have to divert my attention elsewhere, which, with over 25 kids in a class, happens all the time).
Sinise does a nice job lending voice to the different characters but some students find his narration boring (teenagers!), but that's subjective. He maintains an calm, monotone voice throughout the reading.
Overall, if you're buying this for personal use than I would definitely recommend it; however, if you're a teacher than you may have the same issues I do. Not a deal breaker, but annoying that Penguin did not include something I thought was a given.
  • Cannery Row by John Steinbeck
I guess I never realized how much writing technique has changed over the years. This book make me understand the difference between then and now. It is all about a bunch of misplaced men making do with what little they have and being happy, not drowning in sorrow. Helping each other even if not totally understanding that other person. I enjoyed the book and recommend it for non-mystery readers.
  • I own most of the Simon & Schuster Mega Crossword Puzzle books ... and this is the most recent one I ordered. Up to now I have thoroughly enjoyed working them ... but I don't recommend buying this book. The puzzles aren't nearly as good as the later issues. Too many big words I never heard of and/or clues that don't make sense ... and the answers in the back of the book are HORRIBLE! They are so tiny it takes a magnifying glass to make them out. (and my eyesight isn't that bad)

Thankfully all the other books in this series have been hugely improved over this first one they issued. Buy the rest ... skip this one.
