— The New York Time Books Review

«Una ricchezza di idee degna dei più grandi teorici della democrazia.» — Financial Times

«Uno dei massimi studiosi della democrazia liberale.» — Federico Rampini, La Repubblica

National Book Critics Circle Award—2017 Nonfiction Finalist

“Nothing less than a tour de force—a heady amalgam of science, history, a little bit of anthropology and plenty of nuanced, captivating storytelling.”—The New York Times Book Review, Editor's Choice

A National Geographic Best Book of 2017

In our unique genomes, every one of us carries the story of our species—births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration, and a lot of sex. But those stories have always been locked away—until now. Who are our ancestors? Where did they come from? Geneticists have suddenly become historians, and the hard evidence in our DNA has blown the lid off what we thought we knew. Acclaimed science writer Adam Rutherford explains exactly how genomics is completely rewriting the human story—from 100,000 years ago to the present.

"The book presents an update on the advances in the study of DNA. Most of that is good, although some technical terms are not fully explained. It is cluttered with the author's personal baggage on race, religion and political correctness. Some of his arguments are circular. For example, intermarriage between close relatives caused the downfall of the Hapsburgs in Spain, but is a minimal risk for Muslims. Race is said to have no meaning, but DNA from Asians, transferred to mice, caused thicker hair and smaller breasts The first half of the book is the best. The second half is more about PC than science."

A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived The Human Story Retold Through Our Genes edition by Adam Rutherford Siddhartha Mukherjee Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

  • The author really seemed to go off the rails by the second half of the book. I couldn't finish it, hence the one star. The first half regarding DNA studies of early humans was interesting enough, but by the point where he seemed to be arguing that there's no such thing as racial differences or that selective breeding has no effect in human populations (evidently because we are the world, we are the children, etc.), I had to put it down. The author evidently has some kind of chip on his shoulder because of his half-Indian British background that pushes him to see things through a secular PC lens. Disappointing.
  • This was an interesting read. It was a little disappointing that genes really are not that informative for a single person but are best described through populations and associated population statistics. The author has a real problem with Christianity and creationists, so much so, he takes every opportunity to share his opinion of them and their intellectual abilities. It was distracting.
  • While many of the points in negative reviews of this book are well taken, I found the author's approach to the subject to be fascinating. I find the book poorly titled, as it covers much more ground than just the history of our species. The author rightly debunks much of the popular media hype about the impact of genomics in medicine and genealogy, yet he reveals many lesser known and fascinating applications of modern genomics in fields such as human ancestry, revisiting the nature vs nurture question, the geographical migration of Homo sapiens, and their interbreeding with other hominids along the way. Who knew that gene sequencing could tell us much more about human dispersion than archeology? The book becomes a bit Brit-centric in some places (but after all the author is from Great Britain) and some of the chapters could do with some editing, but overall I found this book to be surprising in its broad content and the many interesting revelations of the impact of genomics on what we are finding out about ourselves now, as well as what will be forthcoming in the future.
  • Whether or not it is a genuinely fun or captivating book, A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived demystifies many of the popular misconceptions surrounding the genetics and natural history of humans, and is a good read for anyone wanting to understand the limitations of using DNA to describe who we are and how we came to be. A recurring theme of the book is the tendency of parties to communicate oversimplified or sensational interpretations of genetic research for the purposes of selling newspapers, personalized genetic tests, or even as part of an elaborate legal defense. Rutherford picks apart the often weak scientific evidence supporting such claims, and in doing so provides much of the background and strategy one would need to critically examine a purported ‘scientific breakthrough’ resulting from genetic research. There are also some fun parts sprinkled in about genetics as it relates to human history and prehistory, but readers looking for a lot of, or a highly detailed description of this information will probably be disappointed.
  • The book presents an update on the advances in the study of DNA. The second half is more about PC than science.
  • My name is Chloe, Ben is my father, and he bought me this book for Christmas. I've always been interested in genetics and heritage. In fact, my mother bought me an Ancestry DNA kit for Christmas, fitting for this theme. In college I have studied anthropology, archaeology, and biology, so I already have some background about what this book is about, but there was so, so much more for me to learn. From the beginning of the book I was enthralled. It is interesting - to say the least- as well as well written, entertaining, informative, and so incredibly funny. I can not stress how refreshing it is to read a history/science book that is funny. So often academic books are stuffy and boring, but this one is probably my favorite. Rutherford feels like someone you know. He shares his life and his experiences about his family in such a way so you don't feel like "okay, this guy is talking about himself too much," but in a way that feels so relatable. If you like anthropology or biology or are just curious to read about a little bit of history, read this book. Absolutely wonderful read, have already recommended it to multiple other people.
  • This book traces the history of homo sapiens through our DNA. It is mostly about genetics and genomics, and is addressed to the lay reader. This doesn't make it an easy read, but I found it a worthwhile one. The key point that it brought home to me was just how complicated human genetics really are. The idea of a "cancer gene" or an "intelligence gene" vastly oversimplifies; Rutherford makes it clear that many, many different genes affect most traits (including susceptibility to most diseases) rather than the simple one-to-one equivalence that a lot of popular writing implies. I found it an informative and accessible read about a complex subject.

It was only supposed to be a weekend contract. But Daddy had other plans.

Weekend playdates are my stress release. Contract a girl, have some fun, get back to business. But Jaelynn isn't like my other girls. There's more to her; more substance, and a sensuality I can't just ignore. She's also a naughty girl, but I have no trouble bending her over my knee, or to my will.

She thinks she's holding all the cards this weekend, but by the end, she'll know who her Daddy Ever After really is.

"I enjoyed this fast-paced novella. Jaelynn has gone to work at the Annex, a place where men are invited to hosted parties and buy the time of woman for their various sexual proclivities. Everything is discussed, and a contract is written. Jaelynn has ulterior motives for working there, but when she disobeys the handlers and is approached by Hunter, she will agree to his terms, provided he will agree to hers.

The story will have Jaelynn not fully reading the contract, Hunter demands to be called Daddy, and even convinces Peter to allow him to discipline her for her infraction at the party. With her naïve innocence, Hunter will call her on the floor for more than her naughty behavior. What will he do when he learns what she is up to?

The chemistry between Hunter and Jaelynn is explosive from the start. He dominates her, punishes her and can even be sweet. They have a no sex clause, her demand, and he honors it—but what if they both decide to forego and take things further.

“I’m never letting you go—I don’t think I can give you back.”

The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly, but it also has Jaelynn letting go of the past and accepting she can’t change what happened. She learns to trust Hunter that he will be her Daddy and take care of her, even if it means punishing her. The story has several punishment scenes, some mild age-play scenes, and explicit sex scenes."

  • I truly enjoyed this particular story.
'Daddy Ever After' was an excellent mix of DD/lg & suspense.
The heroine, Jaelynn lies her way into the Annex in order to obtain justice for loved ones by getting close to the man who perpetrated a heinous crime against them. She is 'purchased' for the weekend by Hunter & quickly comes to realize her lies & lack of reading her 'purchase' contract have placed her in a frightening situation.
Hunter however, is very intuitive & rapidly ferrets out the majority of Jaelynn's lies/omissions & sternly addresses them as a good Daddy would, but even he is unaware of her true aim & purpose.
Things progress between Jaelynn & Hunter, the reader is rooting for them to have a HEA but then Jaelynn's secret is exposed & things escalate to an explosive head.
Will Jaelynn & Hunter have a HEA or is Jaelynn's true aim too much for them to overcome?
The author's writing makes the reader (at least this one) want to be invested in, and care about, her H/h & their budding & tentative relationship. The 3 parts of the story, the romance, the DD/lg & the suspense are all perfectly & delicately balanced. A very enjoyable & interesting story.
  • Jaelynn wants revenge for her parent's deaths and got herself work at
the Annex where girls were contracted to be rented out for specific periods
of time. She hoped to get to her target of revenge through the rich men that
frequent the Annex. Things don't exactly work out that way but Jae's experience
is exciting, sexy and surprising for her. Hunter isn't exactly what she expected
but he was what she needed. A firm disciplinarian and the patience and care
of a daddy any little girl would love to serve. Revenge will have to wait as Jaelynn
and Hunter discover all they can with their daddy/little girl dynamic and unquestionable
    attraction.
  • Another win for the men of the Annex! How I love those hot, alpha males of the Annex. They find the woman meant to be theirs and they make no apology for taking control and never letting go. Ms Stone has done another fabulous job with this couple. They may have to work through some issues, but they come together in a HEA that is sure to last. I can’t wait to see what happens at the Annex next.
  • I love the stories of the Annex! Jaelynn is there because she wants to kill the man who killed her parents. Unfortunately, she didn't think it through very well. Hunter just wants a weekend companion to play Dd/lg games with. His uncle is the man she wants to kill. Hunter is sympathetic, but he isn't going to let her get hurt. The weekend fling quickly turns serious and there is a HEA!
  • When Jaelynn goes to the Annex, she is looking for a certain person. Not finding him, she finds herself in trouble when she disobeys and order and Hunter shows up at her side. Within a short amount of time, she has a weekend contract with him and he takes her to his house! Oh, he knows she is lying about almost everything she has said and if it takes a lot of spankings, he will get the truth out of her. This story isn't as dark as other books by Ms. Stone but I still enjoyed it. It was a fairly quick read and I loved it! Pick this book up and enjoy a couple of hours seeing what finally happens to Jaelynn!!
  • This was such a fun read! I loved Maesha’s Beast and The Tower, and those two books introduced me to the Annex, which is where Jae and Hunter meet and work out their weekend contract. Although Hunter doesn’t know the real reason Jae has been coming to the Annex...she has murder in mind. Find out what happens in this short but fun and sexy read. Highly recommended!
  • Strong characters, twist-filled plot, and tingle-inducing dialogue. Measha Stone is a one-click author for me. Everything she writes is amazing and you will be re-reading them, as I do.

This book includes the 3 books ascribed to Enoch. 1 Enoch, 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch. The 1st Book of Enoch, theEthiopic Book of Enoch, or 1 Enoch is more known as simply the Book of Enoch.Although this book is considered apocryphal for the Western canon, it iscontained in the Ethiopic Bible. It was considered sacred by some importantfirst followers of Christ but it was left out of the Bible and disappeared forcenturies until it was rediscovered in 1773 in Ethiopic. This manuscript wasfirst translated into English in the 1820s and into German in the 1830s.According to most scholars, part of it was written in third century BCE andpart of it in the first century CE (the part related to the Son of Man).Although the oldest complete copies of 1 Enoch are K-9 or Kebran 9, dated latefourteenth early fifteenth century and Ethiopian Monastic Microfilm Library(EMML 2080) of the fifteenth or fourteenth century, fragments found in Qumramin the 1950s are more than 2000 years old. Other old important manuscripts areAbbadianus 55 (possibly fifteenth century) and British Museum Orient 485 (firsthalf of the sixteenth century).

  • Many of the Book of Enoch books available are in fact public domain (the R. H. Charles version of 1917) which means they can be given away to anyone for free, by anyone. What is the problem with public domain versions? They are full of errors, as they are around 100 years old and out-dated scholarship. Sure, they might be cheap, but most of the information is wrong. These days, many non-translators (some of whom actually claim to be translators) sell the public domain version of 1917 by R.H. Charles (both as is, and also disguised by slight rewording) as a commercial venture. This version reflects the knowledge of The Book of Enoch as it was back in 1917. Great advances have been made since then.

This is an outdated and poorly translated version of the Books of Enoch. Don't waste your money.
  • Absolutely a must read regardless of your proclaimed religious affiliation. This book is packed with so much truth it may just leave your spinning. I should preface these statements with the fact that in my prayers of late I've come back to my belief in Jesus/Yeshua and have been asking for truth and direction. This book, while many cynics would argue differently, helps explain EVERYTHING in life that's worth your time. If you're wondering why material gain never seems to bring you true happiness, look to your faith for the answers. We're not here for anything this world has to offer materially--Enoch knew this, and passed that on to his lineage through this compilation of books, and teachings. If you're lost in life, pick this up, read it, and be found.
  • a revealing of truths that i have pondered and searched for for years. why it was'nt put into the scripture's is a real mystery to me !!! it fits the missing pieces of the puzzle tgether that give you a better understanding of the shape the world was in and why our heavenly father predestined jesus to redeem us !!! the satan tried every way to stop it and did'nt realize that he was being used to complete the redemption of the very creatures he tried to destroy in the garden.... man !!!!
  • I was really after a good translation of Ethiopian Enoch 1. This translation by Chas Robert just doesn't compare to the better translation of
Richard Laurence which I have on a hard drive. I will be reordering Enoch 1 by Richard Laurence. Enoch 1 is absolutely fascinating about our beginnings and cosmology, the Lord of the Spirits of which the rulers of this world have blinded us. Read Enoch 1 Chapter 43 and understand! .
  • This is a very good book for someone that wants to know more about God and his
angels. Enoch was a man that walked with God to the point that he never died, but
was taken to heaven. The book tells of the organization of heaven and the angels
responsibilities. You will develop a greater love for God and Jesus.
  • I already had a copy of Enoch, but that's what it was. This book is well laid out and original to what I already had. You will find that a lot of the book does coincide with the Bible.
  • I will recommend good reading especially for people who understand prophecy from the Bible not from those how talk with a goal for collecting donation, very good book
  • THIS ISSUE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE VARIOUS TRANSLATIONS OF THE BOOK WHICH MAKES COMPARING THE EXTANT VARIATIONS READABLE AND EXPLAINS TO SOME DEGREE WHY IT WAS NOT PUT INTO THE BIBLE

Send My Roots Rain A Companion on the Grief Journey Kim Langley Books Reviews

  • Years ago in a time of grief, someone dear to me brought a basket filled with things she hoped might help. It included flowers from her garden, homemade muffins, and tea. I didn’t believe I’d ever want to feel better. But I was soothed by the memory of her hands holding it out at my doorstep. The round bowl of that sturdy basket, which I kept in my kitchen for a long time, seemed to gather and hold something in me.

Kim Langley’s extraordinary book, "Send My Roots Rain," is the most generous basket imaginable. It is woven together with poems chosen to resonate with and hold a grieving reader. It is filled with personal stories, quotes, mindful activities, reflections, and Kim’s gentle wisdom. There are no “shoulds” here, only offerings held out by truly caring hands.
  • Kim Langley has expertly curated a collection of poems to soothe the soul, to foster connection, and to ground one’s self in the deeper meaning within the inevitable broken and wounded pieces of life. All throughout this book I found resonance, newness of perspective, and familiar old wisdom inviting me to reflect and slow down with my own experiences as well as those of my loved ones. If you are a lover of poetry, this book is for you. If you are unfamiliar with or intimidated by poetry, this book is for you. Not only has Ms. Langley gathered a treasury of poems on grief and loss, she offers her own reflection, poses questions to guide your further contemplation, and brings it home with an extra and apt quotation for each and every poem. These additional pieces really do make it feel like the book is a companion and guided meditation on grief and life- not just a compilation of poetry on loss.

As a chaplain and spiritual director myself, this book will soon become a go-to tool in my ministry toolkit. Especially if you’ve ever wanted to know how to use poetry in your ministry, counseling, or therapeutic setting of any kind but weren’t quite sure how to do so, this book is for you. Ms. Langley also includes a variety of mindful activities to use with the poems.

I honestly can’t recommend this book enough. Whether you or some you love or work with is grieving- which if we’re honest includes everyone!- this book is worth every penny.
  • My grandfather's death is my earliest memory. Years later playing with the doll bed that he made me, I asked my mom "How old was I when Grandpa Thuresson died?" She said, "Three." While I don't remember my Grandpa Thuresson, I do remember death. The sunlight streams through the venetian blinds laying black stripes across my mom and dad. My mom is sobbing. I have never seen her cry before. My dad is holding her, wordless, looking helpless. Invisible to them, I creep back to my bedroom and pull the covers over my head to not lose myself.
Send My Roots Rain . . . A Companion on the Grief Journey by Kim Langley will not only give you writing and words to see you through loss but will comfort you with many tugs and hugs of recognition to ease your sorrow. I recommend this book.
  • Kim’s book has been a surprising treasure to me. Im grateful for the recommendation from a friend to pick it up. As a chaplain in training, I work with patients and families walking with grief. I’m also aware of my own deep grief that has long lived “under my porch.” I wasn’t aware how unapproachable other books on grief were until reading Kim’s book. There is no prescription, little presumption, and a lot of room for movement within the words found within its pages. This book is for anyone and everyone - not just those dealing with the grief of losing a loved one. In Kim’s book, there is an acknowledgment that grief wears many masks and shows up in surprising ways. Grab a highlighter, a pen and a journal as you’ll find yourself either wanting to copy quotes or dive in with self reflection as you read.
  • This books is lovingly and carefully crafted so that a griever might feel joined through poetry and the author's thoughtful reflections. Langley's voice is that of a compassionate friend who has collected the wisdom of the poets, teachers, and sages to offer to us as refreshment in the desert of grief.

It is reflection through poetry made accessible for the poetry-lover and the poetry-wary alike -- the reflections are both open and practical, offering the griever an invitation and a foothold. As a hospital chaplain, I cherish this book not only for what it offers in my own life, but as an invaluable resource for leading grief groups and chapel services.

This is also a great book to give as a gift to a friend or a family member who is in grief.
  • As an ordained minister for 36 years, I have walked with many people through the grief journey...and have, of course, grieved many kinds of losses myself. Kim's book will be an invaluable resource for me and one I will be recommending to many others. She has selected poetry with depth of meaning and quotes that evoke helpful questions. Her "Mindful Activities" section is full of practical suggestions for people at every stage of grief. I especially appreciate her solid theological stance ("yes, bad things happen to good people), her suggestions about what to say to others who are grieving, and her constant reassurance that caring for ourselves is right and important. I will be ordering more copies to give to friends and relatives...
  • Send My Roots Rain is filled with a collection carefully gathered poems, heartfelt reflections, quotes, and mindful activities for anyone to explore the depths of grief. I found reading the poems along with reflections and mindful activities comforting and encouraging. Kim is a gifted writer sharing her passion with real life experience and humor! I have bought several for gifts for family/ friends who have lost a loved one. This book will also be helpful for anyone in the helping profession or walking with someone on a grief journey. The reflections are written with genuine depth, understanding, acceptance, and compassion on the delicate subject of grief.
